Meat Pie With Homemade Dough

The empanada is one of those recipes along with the potato omelette that you can prepare and leave ready for a dinner with friends or to take to the field, to a meeting, etc. Here we show you a basic empanada recipe as well as a wide variety of variants so that you can customize your empanada as you like best.

  • 1 egg
  • 250 ml milk
  • 25 g yeast
  • Salt

Ingredients for the stuffing:

  • 1/2 kg of minced meat (pork and beef)
  • 1 medium onion
  • 2-3 garlic cloves
  • 1 medium green bell pepper
  • 1 piece of natural red pepper or 1 can of bell peppers
  • 2 cans of natural tomato
  • A pinch of sweet paprika (optional)
  • 1 splash of quality white wine (optional)
  • 2 boiled eggs (optional)
  • Extra virgin olive oil

Preparation of the dough:

  • First, sift all the dry ingredients.
  • Then dissolve the yeast in the warm milk.
  • Next, mix the flour with the egg and add the milk little by little. Stir to form a dough.
  • Next, take it out of the bowl and knead with your hands on a table dusted with flour until you have a consistent handle.
  • Roll the dough into a ball and let it rest in a dry place until doubled in size. 1 hour approximately.
  • Finally, roll it out with a rolling pin and divide it into two rectangular halves.

Preparation of the filling:

  • First, chop the onion and peppers into strips. Cut the garlic into small pieces.
  • Afterwards, fry in a pan with a good drizzle of extra virgin olive oil, salt and a pinch of ground paprika.
  • When they are lightly browned add the seasoned minced meat and another little ground paprika. Fry over medium heat.
  • When you have the vegetables and meat ready, add 2 cans of natural tomato and let it cook for about 10 minutes.
  • Next, water the sauce with a splash of white wine and let it cook for another couple of minutes.
  • Finally, if you want, you can add some boiled eggs and bell peppers, cut into pieces to the sauce. Add them when the sofrito is warm so that the yolk does not disappear from the filling with the heat.

Assemble the empanada:

  • First, heat the oven to 180ÂșC.
  • Afterwards, reserve a small part of the dough to decorate your empanadilla.
  • Next , put half of the dough on a tray greased with butter and sprinkled with a little flour.
  • Prick the entire surface with the fork so that the dough does not rise.
  • Add the sauce, spreading well with a spoon.
  • Cover with the other half of the dough and close all the edges well. Garnish the dough with the part of dough that you have reserved as you like.

  • Finally, put in the oven for 20-30 minutes until golden brown.

Variants to your meat patty:

  • A different and tasty variant: with lamb meat, mushrooms and white wine.
  • If you want to give it a sweet touch, add a chopped carrot to the sauce . prunes or raisins and sprinkle the already cooked and cold patty with icing sugar.
  • For a creamy touch, add bits of cheddar cheese to the filling.
  • And, if what you like are spicy touches, prepare your empanada with red onion and a little bit of ground chili.
