Can Alzheimer’s Disease Be Naturally Prevented?

Alzheimer’s is a neurodegenerative disease characterized by cognitive decline. It is the most common cause of dementia, a continuous decline in thinking, behavioral, and social skills that impairs a person’s ability to function independently.

The first signs of the disease can appear when recent events or conversations are forgotten. As the disease progresses, a person with Alzheimer’s disease will develop severe memory impairment and lose the ability to perform everyday tasks.

The vast majority of Alzheimer’s patients have or have had a relative who has suffered from it before. Alzheimer’s cannot be prevented, however some foods may help prevent its onset.

Vital foods to prevent Alzheimer’s

Some foods have been studied, especially in animals, as learning facilitators, memory enhancers, cognitive performance mitigators or that they could simply have a preventive role in neurodegenerative diseases:

  • Sprouts (alfalfa, lentils, broccoli …)
  • Nuts
  • Sesame
  • Avocado
  • Wheat germ
  • Flax oil

Coenzyme Q10

The department of neurology and neuroscience at Weill Cornell Medical College in New York conducted a study on coenzyme Q10 in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer’s disease in mice. They found that there was a decrease in the pathology and an improved behavior in transgenic mice with Alzheimer’s treated with the natural antioxidant compound CoQ10.

There are foods that contain it, but we can also choose to take it as a supplement for a period of at least 3 months.

This plant has been studied as a complement in the treatment of Alzheimer’s thanks to its neuroprotective properties.

Aromatherapy

In a study published in 2010 by Japanese researchers it was determined that aromatherapy could be an effective non-drug therapy for dementia. Thus, aromatherapy may have some potential to improve cognitive function, especially in AD patients.

In this case we recommend some essences that we can apply in a handkerchief, which we will leave every night next to the pillow, in an aroma diffuser or that we will add to the fabric softener in the washing machine.

There are people who even use them as perfumes, thus enhancing their therapeutic virtues.

Beware of heavy metals

A good way to prevent Alzheimer’s and other neurodegenerative diseases is to bear in mind that one of the causes may be the accumulation of heavy metals in the brain, as some studies have shown.

How do we prevent heavy metals from entering our body?

  • We should preferably choose organic food, free of toxic substances.
  • Large oily fish such as salmon, tuna, or swordfish contain significant doses of mercury.
  • Some vaccines contain heavy metals.
  • We will avoid contact with low consumption light bulbs that can break, as well as old mercury thermometers, etc.
  • We must not put the aluminum foil in contact with food.
  • We will avoid cooking with aluminum utensils. We can use ceramic, cast iron, glass or stainless steel.
